AFGHANISTAN DIPLOMAT TO SPEAK AT MONMOUTH UNIVERSITY ON "PEACE-BUILDING IN AFGHANISTAN:THE ROAD AHEAD"

WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ    The Monmouth University International Student Services Department announced today that M. Ashraf Haidari, Government & Media Relations Officer at the Embassy of Afghanistan in Washington, D.C., will visit Monmouth University’s Pollak Theatre on November 23, 2004 at 7:30 p.m.  Haidari will speak on the topic “Peace-Building in Afghanistan:  The Road Ahead,” and his talk will be followed by a question and answer period.  The event is free and open to the public.

Haidari has recently authored “Rebuilding Afghanistan:  The Diaspora Role,” “No Security, No Trans-Afghan Pipelines,” and he has co-authored a strategy paper on “Reconstruction, Commerce and Trade in Afghanistan” published in Afghanistan:  Looking Forward to the Future, Georgetown University, 2002.  Haidari was International Merit Scholar at Wabash College in Indiana where he obtained a B.A. in Political Science and International Studies in May 2001.  He was a Fellow in Foreign Service and studied International Diplomacy at the Georgetown University Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service.  He is now Peace Scholar at the University enrolled in the Master of Arts in Security Studies.  Haidari comes from Kabul, Afghanistan.  Given his unique background as an Afghan who experienced life firsthand under the Soviet-backed communist regime during the 1980s and the Taliban rule during the 1990s, Haidari has effectively spoken about the recent Afghan politics and international engagement in Afghanistan at numerous conferences and panels.
