GREEN PARTY OF NJ TURNS IN 1,209 SIGNATURES TO SECURE BALLOT SLOTS

Vice-Presidential Candidate Pat LaMarche Speaks in Trenton

TRENTON, NJ — At 10:00 a.m. Monday the Green Party of New Jersey submitted 1,209 signatures on petitions to the N.J. Division of Elections in Trention to get David Cobb and Patricia LaMarche, its Presidential and Vice-Presidential candidates, on the ballot this November. This is 409 more than the 800 necessary.

The petitions were accepted by the Division of Elections.

Following this, several Green Party leaders, including Vice-Chair Jane Hunter, former U.S. Senate candidate Ted Glick and 12th Congressional District candidate Daryl Brooks, spoke at a press conference on the Trenton statehouse steps. They were followed by a main presentation by Vice Presidential candidate Pat LaMarche, who had journeyed from Maine to participate.

Questions from the press were raised about the objectives of the Green Party's efforts this year. Ms. LaMarche answered that two primary objectives were to increase Green Party registration and membership and to support local candidates for office like Daryl Brooks.

Another question concerned Maine's Clean Money public financing system. Ms. LaMarche reported that half of the state legislature are "clean money" candidates. Ted Glick pointed out that legislation passed in New Jersey limits "clean money" efforts here to no more than two assembly district, and that the amount of money required to be raised by candidates to become eligible for public financing was tremendously larger than comparable districts in Maine.
