KEANSBURG POLICE OFFICER IS ACCUSED OF SEXUAL ASSAULT

by ALLAN DEAN

KEANSBURG, NJ  A woman claims to have been sexually assaulted by a Keansburg Police officer last week.  The matter is being investigated by the Monmouth County Prosecutor's office.

According to a source familiar with the case, the women entered Jackie Keelen's bar and related to a patron the story of being assaulted by a policeman.  She said that a Keansburg cop named "David" had forced her to perform oral sex to get out of a ticket.  Mr. Keelen overhearing this confronted the women about the allegation - noting that there is no officer named David on the force.

Keelen called police about the woman.  When officer Dennis Smith arrived at the scene, the woman became hysterical claiming that Smith was the officer named "David" that had previously assaulted her, according to the source.

At police headquarters the woman would not cooperate with police and left on her own for the hospital where she wanted her stomach pumped and a swab of her mouth for DNA samples, said the source.

Mr. Keelen on Wednesday refused to speak with a reporter who called for comment. Efforts to reach Mr. Smith were unsuccessful.

Officer Smith is still on regular duty and is off until Friday. "If we and the Prosecutor's Office deem him to be a danger, then when he returns, we will make the decision (whether to suspend him)" Police Director McCabe said on Wednesday.
