AREA'S MOST GIFTED HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS TO COMPETE AT MONMOUTH JUNIOR SCIENCE SYMPOSIUM AT MONMOUTH UNIVERSITY

Two-day event will be Broadcasted Live via Internet

WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ  Monmouth University last Thursday announced that it will host the 40th annual Monmouth Junior Science Symposium (MJSS) on Thursday and Friday, April 11 and 12 at 9 a.m. in Pollak Theatre. The two-day event will be broadcast live via the Internet at: www.rnonmouth.edu.

The Monmouth Junior Science Symposium is one of 48 regional junior science and humanities symposia that identifies area's best and brightest high school students. MJSS is sponsored by Monmouth University, the U.S. Army, the U.S. Navy, Fort Monmouth (New Jersey), Naval Weapons Station Earle and the Academy of Applied Science. More than 400 junior scientists and their advisors, representing over 50 high schools throughout central and southern New Jersey, annually attend the Symposium.

Held at both Monmouth University and Fort Monmouth, the event features 10 original student research paper presentations and technical lectures by two distinguished guest speakers. In addition to the presentations, students will tour state-of-the-art laboratories at Monmouth University, Fort Monmouth, Brookdale Community College and Naval Weapons Station Earle.

The first-place winner at MJSS will receive a four-year tuition scholarship to attend Monmouth University and a $4,000 cash award. He or she will also be invited to present the winning paper at the National Junior Science and Humanities Symposium in San Diego, California to compete for a $16,000 scholarship. Four runner-ups from MJSS will be invited to attend the national Symposium with the first-place winner. The second-place winner will also present his/her paper at the national symposium in a noncompetitive format.

An additional $5,000 in scholarships will be awarded at MJSS. The Fort Monmouth Chapter of the Armed Forces Communication Electronics Association (AFCEA) will present $2,000 for outstanding papers in computer science and electronic engineering, $1,000 from the Bradley Blonder Scholarship Fund and $500 from the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineering will be divided between the top three papers in each category. In addition, each of the 10 presenters will receive a $50 gift certificate from AFCEA and a $100 award from National Defense Industrial Association.

Ten students have been selected to present their research papers. They are:

  • Jeni Lozauskas, High Tech High School (North Bergen, New Jersey) "Explorations of M1p1 and M1p2 Proteins Nuclear of Saccharomyces cerevisiae"
  • Jignesh K. Amleshvar, High Tech High School, "Recycling for the Future"
  • Eric Gallimore, High Technology High School (Lincroft, New Jersey), "Foliage as Antennae"
  • Usra Khanzada, John F. Kennedy Memorial High School (Iselin, New Jersey), "The Effect of Temperature on the Production of Toxins in Coprinus cinereus Mushrooms"
  • Jamie Klenetsky, Freehold High School, "Asthma in Adolescents in Urban, Rural and Suburban Areas of New Jersey"
  • Daniel Lawrence Cohen, East Brunswick High School, "An Economical Muon Chamber Leak Tester for CERN"
  • Thomas Sweeney, McCorristin Catholic High School (Hamilton, New Jersey), "Where Have All the Beaches Gone?"
  • Lia Oksman, Freehold High School, "Antibiotic-Induced Suicide and Persistence in E. coli"
  • Prem Trivedi, Freehold High School, "Antifungal Properties of Capsicum annum (red chili pepper)
