Mayor Michael Harmon last night recommended Sgt. Gerard "Jerry" Vasto for the position of Chief of Police for the Borough of Atlantic Highlands and the council voted unanimously to appoint him to the post which was vacated September 1 by the retirement of Chief Charles Mazzarella.

Vasto, a third generation, lifelong resident of Atlantic Highlands has been employed as a borough police officer for 23 years - the past 13 years as a Sergeant. He received training in Criminal Justice at York College of Pennsylvania, Brookdale Community College and Seton Hall University.

Councilman Jack Archibald said Jerry Vasto is "well respected by all members of the council and the police department. As Chairman of the Police Commission, I look forward to working with him." He explained to the standing room only crowd that the borough had the benefit of several good candidates.  The council considered 7 candidates for the position, including Police Capt. Timothy Duncan, who served as acting chief since the departure of Chief Mazzarella.

Mazzarella tendered his resignation last November effective September 1 this year. He took early leave for vacation and accrued sick time. Last month, however, he notified the council he would rescind his resignation and stated his desire to continue in his position as Chief of Police. The Mayor and Council then halted the search process while discussions were held. Mazzarella finally withdrew his rescission and retired.

Ultimately, the council, "in a bipartisan process" chose Vasto. Archibald, noting Vasto's extensive community involvement as a former fire chief and as little league coach said he was impressed with Vasto's "good policing ideas and thoughts on overtime costs". Councilman Dwayne Harris was reminded of his own early experience with Chief Vasto when the councilman was a 14 year old police explorer. He said Vasto is "an outstanding member of the police department."

Vasto has held several positions as a member of the Atlantic Highlands Police Benevolent Association including, Secretary, Treasurer, President and State Delegate.  He also serves as a member of the Atlantic Highlands Fire Department where he has held a three year term as staff officer, two years as Assistant Chief and one year as Chief.  He presently serves on the Board of Directors of the Fire Department. He is also a member of the Atlantic Highlands Planning Board.

Vasto said morale is good at the department he will head up. He looks forward to the challenges the new post will provide.
