I would like to offer my congratulations to Mayor Gerry Scharfenberger on his resounding re-election win.  As I examined the credentials of all of the candidates, I was struck by the depth of the mayor’s service to the community.  Not only does he serve as a volunteer in his capacity as mayor, he also volunteers on the Middletown Landmarks Commission, the Middletown Open Space Committee and the Middletown Drug and Alcohol Alliance.  I was also impressed by his aggressive campaign against COAH, the taxpayer-subsidized low-income housing program, the outrageous demands of municipal unions, and the unsustainable awards won through binding arbitration.  His Green Initiative, Recycle2Save Program and novel shared service  agreements shows his ability to think outside the box when it comes to cutting costs and finding new sources of revenue.  Also, his work on behalf of our veterans at the local level has set the standard for all other municipalities.  It stands to reason then, that he was named Public Servant of the Year in 2009 and that Middletown was named one of the top 100 places to live in the country by Money Magazine under his leadership.  To Mayor Scharfenberger and Committeman-elect Kevin Settembrino, I say, best of luck in the coming years.

Sincerely

Michael Vitkansas
