Dear Atlantic Highlands,
Words cannot express how thankful I am for the time, effort, and energy that the PTO and the community put into the school landscape project.
For over a year the PTO discussed, planned, and fundraised for the project. Over that same time period the community volunteered time, services, materials, and financial assistance to achieve this stunning success. Our new landscape mirrors our outstanding programs led by our dedicated staff.
In this time of economic cut backs and reduction of services, I feel it imperative to point out the following:
1. The front steps were replaced by the Atlantic Highlands Board of Education. This was a safety issue, due to a rotted out hand railing and collapsing side wall. These funds came from the maintenance reserve account, in the budget. This account exists to maintain our aging facility. May the new steps serve the district as long as the previous.
2. All plants, landscape, hardscape, mulch. topsoil, and labor were either purchased by the PTO through their fundraising efforts or donated by community members.
3. Over the past three years, the PTO and community volunteers have added to, and enhanced our playground, renovated the front of the school, and repaired/replaced our lighting and sound systems in the gym. All of these were achieved at no cost to the Atlantic Highlands taxpayers.
I often state publicly that we are a neighborhood school. I thank you all for making the neighborhood even more beautiful.
Sincerely,
Christopher J. Rooney
Superintendent
