Letter to Atlantic Highlands Herald
The Atlantic Highlands Board of Education wants taxpayers to know that the teachers of Atlantic Highlands Elementary School are working with a contract. The Atlantic Highlands Education Association (the teachers) concurs; however, we’d like the taxpayers to be aware of a few specifics.
We are working according to the contract that expired in June 2018. As such, we have not received any increase in compensation.
The administrators of AHES all have renewed contracts – three of which include a 3.2% increase, a 5% increase, and a 6.4% increase. (One of these raises was misstated at the board meeting last night based on incorrect information supplied to us by the Board Administrator in response to an Open Public Records Act request.) These contracts are public documents but cannot be found on the AHES website.
In January 2019, the healthcare costs for school employees will increase. If teachers are still working under the expired contract, this will mean that our take home pay will decrease. This actually happened to some of our teachers under another contract even after we were given an increase in salary.
At Tuesday night’s Board of Education meeting, teachers, parents, town residents, and students addressed the Board praising the teachers of AHES and supporting the settlement of an equitable contract.
The Board’s response was to thank those who spoke, to praise the teachers, and to defend their respect of the negotiations process.
The teachers of AHES do not feel it is fair that we are being offered a 3% raise when our colleagues at Henry Hudson settled for 3.6% and the average raise of our administrators is 4.9%. We urge board members to heed the words of the taxpayers they represent and the teachers whom they “respect” by agreeing to compensate the above average educators of Atlantic Highlands Elementary School with a raise that is equitable and justified.
