Republicans endorsed Democrats in the last election. The Democrats are returning the favor by not running candidates this election, and endorsing those same former Republicans running as Independents. This classic Atlantic Highlands cronyism has created a merry-go-round of people desperate to maintain their decades long hold on the town at the expense of its citizens. During the reign of this cabal, the town has accomplished little meaningful change except a significant rise in taxes.
On the other hand, the real Republicans have vetted real candidates with significant advantage in education, experience and good ideas. The Republican candidates, Steve Boracchia and Sue Tidswell, are the only hope to improve the harbor and produce the amount of revenue it should in order to reduce taxes. Hopefully, they start with eliminating the Harbor Commission. In any event, they bring fresh and new ideas, and haven't been wrapped up in the decades of town management monopolized by the same old few people with so little accomplishment.
To put the importance of this election to me in perspective, my first experience voting was for George McGovern many decades ago, and I have voted only Democratic since then. My vote for the Republicans in the local election this November will be my first Republican vote.
