Dear Editor,
I was horrified to read the unscientific and reactionary words of Middletown Township Committeman Gerry Scharfenberger in his Letter to the Editor regarding marijuana legalization. Anyone with these draconian views should not hold public office.

I have a medical marijuana card from Colorado and have found it to be significantly beneficial in treating my debilitating illness. Marijuana is a remarkably safe substance.

Having grown up in the Port Monmouth section of Middletown and graduated in 2013 from Middletown North High School, most of the people I know in Middletown also use marijuana for various reasons. These friends and neighbors are all good productive citizens.

I think the real reason that Sharfenberger is against legalization is because Middletown Township makes too much in fine revenue from pot busts and politically connected people get jobs from the Municipal Drug and Alcohol Alliance and working as Police Officers.

Legalize, tax and regulate marijuana. It's worked for Colorado.
