Dear editor,

In case you weren’t paying attention, President Obama has delayed the decision to allow construction of the Keystone XL pipeline until after the 2012 election. He basically handed the crude oil that would come from Canada over to China’s refineries while killing potentially tens of thousands of American jobs. He stated there are “Environmental concerns” to be considered. It is estimated that we already have somewhere around 50,000 miles of pipeline here in America that delivers oil every day with minimal impact on our environment. The State Department’s recent Environmental Impact Statement found that the pipeline would pose few environmental risks.

With this decision the President has secured his left wing base while destroying the hopes and dreams of so many Americans from North Dakota to Texas who are in need of work. At the same time the President’s action or lack of action for a better term deepens our dependence on foreign oil.

The shipping of crude oil across thousands of miles of ocean by tanker is far more costly and dangerous to the environment. China’s refineries have less than adequate safety/emission standards. In my opinion this delay makes no sense, does more harm than good to America and is clearly another example of our President putting his election campaign over what is best for America.

Americans all across our nation deserve better from our President and we should demand that he reconsider his decision for the sake of all Americans not just the ones who support his re-election bid.
