Winter Programs on History & Nature Set for the Winter Season
SANDY HOOK, NJ -Fort Hancock Christmas in the 1940s, nature walks and tours of historic Fort Hancock are among the upcoming activities scheduled at the Sandy Hook Unit of Gateway National Recreation Area.
In December Gateway will present programs that highlight the holidays on Sandy Hook. History House, an officer's residence at historic Fort Hancock, will be decorated for Christmas in a 1940s theme. The Christmas program at History House will also be offered on Saturday evening, December 13 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. with live music from the 1940s. Other special events include an afternoon of live Jazz, a visit from Santa and an afternoon of children's Christmas craft activities. A Fort Hancock Holiday walk and an Evening Lantern Tour will also get you into the holiday spirit.
On January 1, begin the New Year with the American Littoral Society on their annual New Year's Day Walk "Round the Hook." Other wintertime programs include birding walks by the Monmouth County and New Jersey Audubon Societies, Holly Forest Walks, and a program about the men of the United States Life- Saving Service who rescued victims of shipwrecks off the Jersey Shore. A program on the lighthouses, beacons and buoys of New York Harbor and two winter night prowls will also be offered.
The Sandy Hook Visitor Center is open every day except December 25 and January 1 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. On weekends History House and the Lighthouse Keeper's Quarters, adjacent to the Sandy Hook Lighthouse, are also open.
