HOW
TO AVOID CHILDREN'S ARM INJURIES THIS BASEBALL SEASON
Most of the school baseball teams are nearing the end of
their season. The start of the
little league season is a sure sign that summer is almost here. Here are some
tips on how to avoid arm injuries especially in those young pitchers.
- First,
teach young athletes to be mindful of how their bodies feel.
Pain is usually the last sign that there is a problem.
Kids need to pay close attention to any tightening, twinges, or
burning sensations and report them to the coach as soon as it happens.
- The
coaches should carefully observe pitching techniques.
Success on the field may be fleeting if the pitching is damaging a
young player’s arm.
- Conditioning
and strengthening exercises are most effective after proper mechanics and
technique are learned. Try to
begin a conditioning program at least a month before the season begins.
Teach your kids an entire proper stretching routine before they even
pick up the first baseball.
- This
one is common sense among anyone who as any experience with the game.
Always start with short tosses and gradually work your way up to
greater distances. Increasing velocity of the throw is the final step.
- Most
leagues have limits to the number of pitches a young athlete can throw in a
game, but if there any pain or swelling in the shoulder, elbow or wrist
joints after play has stopped ice may help with the discomfort but any
consistent problems should be reported to a suitable health professional.
- And
of course from the Chiropractic point of view you can help maintain normal
mechanics of the arm and shoulders by making sure all young athletes are
having theirs spines checked regularly by a Chiropractor.
Almost all professional baseball teams now have a Chiropractor as
part of their support crew.
