REPORTS OF RIVER, BAY AND OCEAN FISHING
>==>>>>:> >>=>>>:>

October 10, 2003

The Stripers are starting to show up but the action is still spotty. John Matteucci did well on Monday trolling the Sandy Hook Beach but did not fair so well on Thursday. I have seen good surf activity in the wash. It seems all of the birds are are directly in the surf. If you have a small boat or are daring throughing plugs into the waves seems productive for Bass and blues.

Capt. Nick LaViola, Tackle Box Sportfishing, Highlands, had Jeff Williams and party, Eatontown, out for bass, and they caught 30 up to 18 pounds on live eels and Squid Eels. "Sciortino advises drift fishing them on a three-way rig the same as a real eel, but they are half the price of a live eel, and have been outfishing the real thing, he claims.

Bass fishing under the bridges is starting to see reults w/ worms and eels. As I write there are 5 boats succesfully drifting the outgoing tide. Check them out on the web cam http://bahrs.com/bahrscam1.html

Striper fishermen who fish the Bayshore area and the Sandy Hook grounds are looking forward to the annual Hi-Mar Striper Tournament, which will be held from Oct. 17 through Oct. 19.

The captains' meeting is set for 7 p.m. Oct. 17 at the senior citizens' center in Atlantic Highlands Municipal Harbor. Fishing starts at 8 p.m. the same night, and ends at noon Sunday -- 40 hours of continuous bass fishing.

Usually from 70 to 100 boats fish this tournament, and there will be prizes for the first five places. Winners are determined on the weight of the two largest striped bass caught.

For further information on the tournament, telephone Bob Kamienski at (732) 495-9210.

Big humpback porgys and sea bass are being caught at the Sandy Hook Reef.

Fluke Season Ends Monday. There still are a few lone rangers catching big fluke.

Captain Brian Orio on the Baby Anna came back form the canyon on Thursday w/ 4 longfins and four nice big Yellowfins they realeased  a bunch as well.
