Start of Monmouth Beach 3 Mile Run - photos Bob Both, JSRC

MONMOUTH BEACH, NJ - The Monmouth Beach Parent Teachers Association, in conjunction with the Jersey Shore Running Club (JSRC), presented its 14th annual 3-Mile Run at 9 a.m. on an overcast, mild, good-running-weather morning of May 10 and 253 road racers completed the loop course that started and finished at Griffin Street Memorial Park.

Robert Cavanaugh was first across the finish line

West Long Branch’s Robert Cavanaugh, 30, led all 252 other racers following the lead vehicle, a Honda motorcycle driven by Jonathan Howard accompanied by his wife Susan, who just happens to be the mayor of Monmouth Beach, and was the first finisher who broke the tape held by third graders Erin Rogers and Maggie Pavlick (daughter of the race director) at the same time the racing clock (provided by John Kuhi of Ocean Township) read 15:24 (15 minutes and 24 seconds).  -  “It’s a good course, mainly flat, a little hilly - a nice loop around a great town - great weather, a bit breezy the first mile out, no humidity, overcast, perfect temperature,” were Cavanaugh’s initial comments regarding the course and weather. Cavanaugh was the runner-up last Sunday of the Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School 5-mile annual race and today’s victory is a repeat performance because Cavanaugh is this event’s 2007 champion.

Catherine Satzke is the women's champion

Catherine Satzke, 38, of Fair Haven was the women’s champion at 18:21 (6th place overall). “The town of Monmouth Beach is absolutely gorgeous when you’re out running in it,” said Satzke and she too had a positive thought on the weather: “It was a little windy but it was great running weather.” Like Cavanaugh, Satzke also ran the runner-up position of the RFHRHS race.

Rounding out the top three male finishers: Luciano DeOliveira, 29, of Long Branch at 15:54 and Ken Shatzer, 33, of Middletown at 16:32; female: Jennifer Huesman, 38, of Fair Haven at 18:51 (9th overall) and Dalia Viggiano, 29, of Red Bank at 19:47 (14th overall).

No baby-sitters needed in this Monmouth Beach family because they do this race together even though Maive Azzolina is two years old and her brother Henry is only five-months old.  Their father Kevin, 33, racing along with his wife Jennifer, also 33, at his side, had the arduous but also lovable task of pushing their jogging stroller, into which their children were comfortably settled, the whole 3 miles in just 24 minutes and 13 seconds. Jennifer was a second faster at 24:12.  Now that’s family togetherness that’s deserving of a round of applause till our hands hurt!

Kids races including the Dolphin Mile are part of this event and eleven-year-old Sarah George was first to finish of the total 131 challengers.  Sarah also had run the 3-mile race in 19:51 (15th overall).

Race director Kathlane Pavlick along with other race-committee members gave awards of Shore Runner gift certificates, trophies and PTA Certificates to the aforementioned winners and age-group leaders on the grounds of the Monmouth Beach Elementary School which served as the staging area. The Monmouth Beach PTA is the beneficiary.

"It was another exciting and fun Monmouth Beach PTA Run fo the participants and spectators.  There were close to 400 total runners showing up for all 3 races.  Probably the most exciting part of the day was watching our local young talent Kevin Masica -13 and Sarah George-11 claiming the First Monmouth Beach Resident award.

Monmouth Beach PTA run would not be a success without the help of all our volunteers, especially the  MB PTA Race Committee, the members of the Jersey Shore Running Club, and all the PTA parents that volunteered on race day to make this run go off like clockwork.  I want to recognize the continued support of the Monmouth Beach police lead by Lt. Drew Winans, who always works diligently to make the race safe for participants and spectators.   I would also like to thank the Monmouth Beach Borough, Fire and First Aid Departments  for their presence and support.  Thanks to the many participants this year and for thee financial support of all our sponsors - the success of the race will allow the PTA to provide educational resources for our school and will enhance the programs for the students at the Monmouth Beach School," said Kathlane Pavlick, director, in an E-mail summary.
