LINCROFT, NJ —This past March, after a
30-day trial period, “Teddy Bear” the horse received an official green light to
join the Asbury Park Police Department’s new Mounted Unit. Originally donated to the Park System’s
Therapeutic Riding program at Sunnyside Recreation Center, the 20-year old
Thoroughbred was transferred to this new position after proving to be an ideal
partner for both the officers and the other horse in the program.
On March 26th, 2008, the Monmouth County Park System officially transferred the horse “Teddy Bear”, pictured center with Officer Tony Butler, to the Asbury Park Police Department’s Mounted Patrol Unit. Park System Stable Manager Cindy Ross (left) helped with the transfer, while Officer Mike Cassidy and horse “Guinness” (right) complete the new unit.
The Board of Recreation
Commissioners voted to convey ownership on Monday, March 24th, and
the Park System officially notified the Asbury Park Police Department in a
letter dated March 26th.
When the police department first spoke
with Park System staff about developing their equestrian unit, Stable Manager
Cindy Ross immediately thought of Teddy. “It was a good opportunity for us to work
together on this program, but an even better opportunity for Teddy.”
During his time as a therapy horse,
the staff realized that Teddy might be happier working with a regular partner
in a dynamic environment like the mounted patrol. Plus, Teddy and Officer
Tony Butler formed a connection at their first meeting. “I know this horse
very well and rarely have I seen him act so drawn to a person,” said Ross. “They have a mutual trust that will serve
them well as partners," she continued.
The Park System was pleased to
assist "Teddy Bear" on the path to finding his true calling. He
and Officer Butler now work the beat in Asbury Park with Officer Mike Cassidy
and his horse, Guinness.
