In the early spring in a bush in front of the parsonage a couple of sparrows made their nests. The leaves covered their nests and then we heard the chirping of the young. In a couple of weeks we were able to see 20-30 sparrows coming and going. It provided a whole orchestra starting early in the morning and into the late night. I have greeted the sparrows many times and have told them that I really appreciate their music. They became an inspiration to me every day because they reminded me that I should likewise praise God constantly. They reminded me of the verse in the Psalms that declares: “This is the day that the Lord had made, we will rejoice and be glad in it.” (Psalm 118:24) I also was reminded of the fact that God takes care of the sparrows. In fact the word “sparrow” connotes the smallest birds. You can find them on every continent. When Jesus Christ wanted to teach his disciples that their Father will take care of them, he talked about the sparrows. “Are not two sparrows sold for one penny? Yet none of them will fall to the ground apart from the will of your Father. And even the hairs of your head are numbered. So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.” Matthew 10:29-31. During the Billy Graham Crusades throughout the world a favorite song of the multitudes was Ethel Waters’ rendition of “His Eye Is on the Sparrow.” In a way this was a theological song, but in many ways it was so powerful because it was the testimony of Ethel Waters about how God has taken care of her through great times and awful times. The leaves from the bush have all fallen down. You can see the nests in full sight. Some of the sparrows have migrated to other places, however, many have stayed and they keep singing. As I see them perched on branches, I have reflected on who will take care of them in the cold of the winter. And in their music, the Holy Spirit spoke to me: You have the same Father: He will take care of you and He will take care of them also. For his eye is on the sparrow, and I know he watches me.
