I don't go to kids movies to often, but my grandson is 3 1/2 and wanted to get out of the house. "Penguins of Madagascar" is rated PG (though I thought closer to a G) and the the cold weather steered us inside. Went to the new Cine-grand facelift theatre in Ocean Twp (folks you have to post your ticket prices).
I am not sure if I saw the original Penguins movie and maybe I'm getting it confused with Happy Feet. Doesn't matter, this movie really worked. First, it wasn't "dark" like many PG flicks these days. The required "bad guy" was a goofy, unscary octopus named "Dave"... that's my kind of "no gooder" as he didn't freak out the little ones. For adults, this movie reminded me a lot of the original Aladdin with Robin Williams. There were so many funny lines for the adults that were clean and hilarious.
Simply this is the story of 4 very precocious young penguins who set out from their north pole home to find and save all the penguins that are disappearing from zoos around the world. They pair up with this wannabe elite agency called the "North Wind" that put the "S" in soft to capture Dave A.K.A. Dr. Octavius Brine (voiced brilliantly by John Malkovich).
This movie is going to have serious box office legs. I would take my grandson back in a minute because its "no dark"...simple movie fun and laughs. Well done Dream Works ...penguins rule.
