ATLANTIC HIGHLANDS – A lecture and video presentation of the Battle of the Philippine Sea will be presented at the local branch of the Monmouth County Library on Thursday, June 21 at 7 p.m. The library is located in the municipal building, 100 First Ave.
Cole Snedeker, a third-year student at High Tech Vocational High School and a World War II history aficionado, will present the program highlighting the American sea fleet during one of the major battles of the second World War.
The Battle, conducted 74 years ago next week, was the largest carrier-to-carrier battle in history, and pitted the US Navy’s Fifth Fleet against the air and naval forces of the Imperial Japanese resulting in eliminating the Japanese Navy from conducting further large-scale carrier assaults. It was the last of five major carrier engagements between the two nations and also included strikes by American submarines and intense air battles.
This will be Snedeker’s third presentation at the Library, all with an accent of major battles of the war, a period of American history Snedeker has studied with intensity in keeping with his goal of further studies of military history in college and ultimately a career with the US military.
A member of the school’s Chess team, Snedeker is also on High Tech’s Academic team.
The son of Cole and Pridie Snedecker, he has been a resident of Atlantic Highlands for five years.
There is no fee for the program, and no reservations are necessary. For further information on this and all programs in the county library’s headquarters in Manalapan or any of its branches, visit www.monmouthcountylib.org.
