REFLECTIONS ON SACRIFICE AT THANKSGIVING Thanksgiving means different things to many people. This column was originally going to be about turkeys, and the year’s biggest political blunders. But instead of writing about the failed experiment of public funding for campaigns, it is more appropriate to focus on sacrifice. Over the past three weeks, Monmouth County has lost some heroes in Iraq. We can debate the merits of the war, but the fact remains that our countrymen and women are overseas trying their best to bring democracy to the Middle East. The soldiers on the front line are trying to bring some order to the daily chaos that is taking place in Iraq. We have lost some great patriots recently. Two of the causalities were West Point graduates, and by all accounts, among the nicest kids you would ever want to meet. These guys have given their lives for their country, and Thanksgiving at their homes just won’t be the same. Another man just left his young family in Atlantic Highlands to serve a tour in Iraq. These are the people making real sacrifices. Sure, everyone is trying to make Atlantic Highlands and Monmouth County a better place to live, but it cannot compare to the sacrifices that our men and women in the military are making. Thanksgiving should be a time of reflection and to honor our traditions - traditions made possible by those that have fought for our freedom. So before you dig into the turkey, pray for the safe return of our soldiers, the people that are willing to sacrifice their lives to protect our way of life.
