RECOMMENDATIONS FOR TUESDAY

Since many voters on Tuesday will be basing their decisions on the ethical behavior of the candidates, I am bound to disclose my obvious conflict. I am a registered Republican and my name is on the ballot. With that out of the way, the recommendations for Tuesday are as follows:

Atlantic Highlands - It is pretty obvious that after two years under Democrat control, we have been left with nothing but failed promises. Not one acre has been preserved, water and sewer rates have increased, and taxes have risen for two consecutive years. We haven’t had a promised referendum on the waterfront and there haven’t been any grants brought home to offset our taxes with a Democrat controlled legislature.

My record on open space and opposition to over-development is second to none, and I can point to many accomplishments over three terms. My running mate, Pete Doyle is a credit analyst at a major Wall Street firm who will bring enthusiasm and a fresh perspective to our governing body. Residents can count on the return of open and honest government and fiscal responsibility with a Republican vote in our town next week.

Freeholders - No doubt there has been some slips at the county level. However, none of the transgressions have occurred on the watch of Republican Bill Barham and Lillian Burry. They are far superior candidates to the Democrat offering, and the Republicans can be counted on to run a more fiscally responsible Monmouth County government.

State Assembly - Assemblymen Steve Corodemus and Sean Kean deserve your vote. Where is the funding coming from for their Democrat opponents? You can’t spend over $800,000 for a legislative seat and not be beholden to special interests. Corodemus and Kean have been on the right side of pay to play, they support property tax reform and deserve another term.

Governor - While both candidates can be accused of buying the spot, Doug Forrester and his 30% in 3-year tax reduction should be given a chance. Senator Corzine has spread so much of his wealth around that any promise about reforming pay to play rings hollow. One hopes that the public will make sure that the Senator stays in DC and concentrate on bringing home some bacon for our state.

Your vote does count. Our country is founded on the freedom of choice and exercising your right to vote is the basic tenant of our democracy. To my loyal readers and voters in Atlantic Highlands, thank you in advance for your support. No matter what, get out and vote.
