POLLS HAVE FORRESTER QUICKLY CLOSING THE GAP

An upset could be brewing in New Jersey. According to the latest polls, Republican Doug Forrestor has been closing the gap in the Governor’s race with Senator Jon Corzine. While it is never a good practice to trust the polls, there appears to be enough chinks in Corzine's armor to believe that an upset could happen.

Forrestor has a pretty good history of closing fast. When Forrestor last ran statewide, he was clearly beating former Senator Robert Torricelli for his seat. If not for an absurd decision by the New Jersey Supreme Court that allowed the Democrats to sub Frank Lautenberg for Torricelli, Forrestor would be sitting this race out as an incumbent Senator. As it is, he is spending his fortune trying to take down a candidate once thought of as invincible.

It could be that Garden Staters are tired of Democrat inaction on property taxes. Or it could be that voters are tired of the runaway spending in Trenton by the ruling party. Yet another factor might be that voters are beginning to see how big money corrupts politics and no one represents big money like the Senator. Corzine has spread his dough around the state so much, should he take office, that conflicts are inevitable.

Maybe the people like the 30% reduction in 3 years tax proposal put forth by Forrestor and the Republicans that they are willing to take a chance. But if Forrestor can’t convince conservative Republicans to get out and vote for him, he probably can’t beat Corzine. It would be ironic if Republicans stayed home, while Democrats cross over to buck the party.

The only thing for certain is that the advertising has only just begun for both candidates. With the amount of money available to both men, the media is going to have a record October. Our airwaves will be overflowing with mud; the only question left is does Doug have enough momentum to pull off a gigantic upset.
