INSTEAD OF CUTTING SPENDING, DEMOCRATS EXPAND TAXES TO FUND REBATES If ever you could make a case to get rid of the ruling party, there is quite a show going on in Trenton right now. With just two days left before the state constitution requires that a budget be adopted, taxpayers are fed the word that neither side is close to an agreement. And the Democrats control both sides! New Jersey residents might be able to rationalize the disagreement if it was the result of political posturing by the Republicans and Democrats. However, this feud is between the State Senate and the State Assembly, both firmly under the grip of the Democrat Party. It makes you wonder where these guys are getting their political advice. New Jersey is already steaming over property taxes and now the Democrats are arguing over the size of the rebates. . Each side says it is committed to keeping a rebate plan intact for the citizens of our state. The Senate plan includes raising taxes on gym memberships and cable services, while the Assembly plan aims to expand the taxes on corporations Does it occur to either group that they should review their spending habits? In the past three years, property taxes have increased by 18 percent and last year, state spending increased by over $2 billion from the prior year. Surely, there is pork to be found and cut within the budget. Instead of finding ways to lower our property taxes, the state Democrats want to expand taxes to fund their rebates. Republicans weren’t perfect, but this type of chaos two days before the budget is to be adopted is ridiculous. Some type of compromise will be reached in the coming days, but it sounds like taxes will be raised and the agreement won’t include any belt tightening. This isn’t going to play well to the voters in New Jersey, and the Democrats will only have themselves to blame when they find themselves on the sidelines in Trenton.
