REVOLVING DOOR IN ATLANTIC HIGHLANDS

As the revolving door in Atlantic Highlands borough hall keeps swinging, the Donoghue Administration continues to make personnel decisions that can best be described as puzzling. For those of you keeping score at home, the borough is now on its third Chief Financial Officer and our third zoning officer and code enforcement officers since January.

The search for a CFO has been bungled since Catherine Campbell walked out the door. But then she didn’t wave goodbye, because the Administration rehired her as a consultant to train her replacement. After spending $3,000 on Ms. Campbell, the new CFO announced that March 31 would be her last day. The next CFO decided that working nights suited him- without alerting borough officials- and that CFO had access to sensitive borough information after hours until Councilman Lou Fligor put a stop to his employment with the borough.

On top of this, we find out that the Administration retained the same management company for $8,000 to send us additional CFO candidates. Instead of advertising in regional newspapers for far less, the majority decided to open the checkbook and see what other candidates are in the pipeline for the position. Finally, as an added insult, the borough attorney has jammed taxpayers another $902 on this matter in just two months, clearly an issue where no legal matter exists and which should be covered in her $25,000 per year retainer.

Not to be outdone by the CFO situation, the zoning officer and code enforcement search deals turn out equally bad for our residents. No one disputes that the positions can be done part time, but the Administration appears to have given approval for both of these professionals to start after 4:30pm. The regular business hours for the borough end at 4:30pm, and Atlantic Highlands will be having fractional part time employees unsupervised in our borough hall.

That arrangement should not be acceptable and borough hall should not be a revolving door. Taxpayers and visitors expect consistency downtown, and to date, this Administration has only delivered turnover.
