TOWN-WIDE GARAGE SALE When spring arrives, everyone starts thinking about cleaning out their old treasures and making room. In Atlantic Highlands, the time to do that is now so you can participate in Monmouth County’s longest running Garage Sale. And it will be a sight to behold on April 30. For the ninth consecutive year, the Atlantic Highlands Recreation Commission will be sponsoring the town wide Garage Sale. Under the leadership of Marylynn Hughes and the dedicated recreation volunteers, residents can sign up at borough hall and list their home as a location for can’t miss deals. For the paltry fee of $5, your home will be placed on a map and distributed to both visitors and residents seeking bargains. Last year, over 100 residents in Atlantic Highlands participated as sellers. On the buy side, over 700 maps were given out to customers in 2003 and 2004. No matter how you slice it, that is a lot of visitors wandering about town and a great opportunity for our First Avenue merchants to grab some clientele. In past years, many businesses have participated in the sale and some restaurants have provided discounts to those visitors that present their maps. For bookworms, the Friends of the Library will be offering steals in front of the library as well. If you want to join the fun and hold a sale, register at borough hall and receive your black checkered flag that denotes you as a seller. If you want to bargain shop, be at borough hall at 9am on April 30 to receive a map (there is no charge for maps). Our yard sale has been so successful that many other towns have copied our format, and one daily newspaper even uses Monmouth Park in the fall for a garage sale. It is a day that should not be missed and our recreation members deserve a round of applause for their dedication year after year. The event breaks even at best, but there are plenty of laughs watching shoppers scurry from house to house. Oh yeah, the rain date is scheduled for May 1, but as most of us know, its always sunny and 70 in beautiful Atlantic Highlands.
