HENRY HUDSON REGIONAL PROJECT NEARS COMPLETION

A major local milestone was reached this week with very little fanfare. Over the past week, the new wing to the Henry Hudson Regional High School opened and students have been attending classes in the new addition. Although there are a few finishing touches to be added, the majority of the work for the expansion appears to be over.

The new addition is a pretty impressive structure. For those regional taxpayers that may be unaware, the school district has added an entire wing of new classrooms and an all purpose room that is state of the art. The project also doubled the size of the music room in the existing building. At least three of the classrooms in the new wing are flexible, with enough room to teach large classes but can also be converted into smaller groups if necessary. Those students with a scientific bent can’t help but be pleased with the larger labs to conduct their experiments and easier access around the room.

The all- purpose room is a sight to behold. At first glance, it is nothing more than a brand new second gymnasium. However, it has a stage for theatre productions and will also house the students dining needs during the day. This room can accommodate over 300 people for a dance performance and may also allow for expanded recreation programs for both boroughs during off peak hours.

Still to come is the conversion of the old cafeteria into a media center. This new library - which will be hooked up with Monmouth County library system- is not just for the students, as residents from both Atlantic Highlands and Highlands will be welcome. Some minor improvements to the existing gym are also in the works, but the most of the capital improvements have been completed.

The Henry Hudson Board of Education and Superintendent Dr. Brian Zychowski should take a bow. They rallied support for the referendum and have seen the project through its completion. No doubt the students are happier with more room and the project addressed some deficiencies in the structure as well. The finish line for the entire project is in sight and all taxpayers should take a trip up the hill to see the new school.
