EMPTY PROMISES AND BAD RESULTS

The municipal election in Atlantic Highlands for this year is beginning to come into focus.

On the Republican side, incumbent Councilman Lou Fligor and Councilwoman Kim Spatola are seeking re-election based on their proven record of accomplishments.

On the Democrat side, the two candidates are urging voters to solidify Democrat control over the evenly split 3-3 borough council. Mayor Donoghue now casts all tie-breaking votes.

It is entirely appropriate then to review some of the promises made last year by the Democrat team and assess their results:

Elimination of the Sewer Authority- this promise hasn’t happened and reduction of our sewer rates is nowhere in sight. Compare your bills from this year to last.

Real Financial Management- The largest municipal tax increase in 10 years. Then the Democrat administration awarded a 20% raise to the acting borough clerk after only 5 months on the job while eliminating the sidewalk program for residents.

Protecting Open Space- Mayor Donoghue, as a member of the Planning Board voted in favor of a developers plan on Keystone Drive in the borough’s sensitive steep slope area.

Propose a real First Avenue plan- Nine months in office and not a single initiative to attract investment in our business district has been put forward.

No Harbor Expansion without Referendum- One year later and the Democrats still haven’t come up with a question, much less a plan.

These were the hot button issues that the Democrats promised to address in the last election. Its pretty clear that the results are far different from the promises made and by now, the excuse of being a new Administration has run its course. Unfortunately, for the Democrat challengers it’s too late in the campaign to distance themselves from these unfulfilled promises made to Atlantic Highlands last year.
