The following message is from Atlantic Highlands Environmental Commissioner Joe Reynolds:

The Atlantic Highlands Environmental Commission and 100 Girl Scouts from the Monmouth County Hartshorne Unit planted over 400 tree saplings on Sunday, April 18, 1999 at the Lenape Wood Preserve. For reforestation purposes, tree species were mostly oak, pine and spruce. The dilemma now is trying to get enough water to them for survival, especially during the hot, dry summer months. Saplings require a gallon of water a week! It would be great if anyone with free a hour now a than spent their time bringing a few jugs of water and offering them to the saplings. They are located in eastern section of Lenape Woods, along a portion of Woodchuck Hill trail ( a huge open area with hundreds of small tree saplings).

Thank you!!

Spring Planting

Over 100 community volunteers planted 450 tree seedlings in Lenape Woods Nature Preserve on April 18, 1999 sponsored by the Environmental Commision of Atlantic Highlands. Most were Girl Scouts from the Hartshore Service Unit. The 39-acre preserve is being restored to its natural condition with oak, spruce, pine, cedar, dogwood and other tree seedlings. Hiking trails are being cleared as well as mulched and bordered for erosion control.
