The following message is from Atlantic Highlands Environmental Commissioner Joe Reynolds:
The Atlantic Highlands Environmental Commission and 100 Girl Scouts from the Monmouth County Hartshorne Unit
planted
over 400 tree saplings on Sunday, April 18, 1999 at the Lenape Wood Preserve. For reforestation purposes, tree species were mostly oak, pine and spruce. The
dilemma now is trying to get enough water to them for survival, especially during the hot, dry summer months. Saplings require a gallon of water a week! It
would be great if anyone with free a hour now a than spent their time bringing a few jugs of water and offering them to the saplings. They are located in
eastern section of Lenape Woods, along a portion of Woodchuck Hill trail ( a huge open area with hundreds of small tree saplings).
